To Do Basic Search Engine Optimization for Web Pages by:
Tim Slavin
When a prospect or customer uses Google to find a product or service you
offer, ideally you want your web pages to appear in the top 10 search results.
There are many excellent articles online that describe different ways to improve
the search engine rankings of your web pages. My goal is not to write yet
another how-to article about search engine optimization. Today I want to
describe basic steps that businesses can take before they explore more refined
optimization strategies. I encounter many clients whose web sites fail to meet
even rudimentary search engine optimization. Don't worry, however. You do not
have to be technically inclined to make most of these changes, or to understand
everything. Best case, this article will confirm that your web pages are...

Things you should know about affiliate marketing by:
Tomas Anderson
The truth about affiliate marketing is that 90% of
affiliates make under 100$ a month. So I would not count on making a full-time
income unless you can really learn and get super good at the following: 1.
How to build a good site that converts 2. SEO - you need TONS of traffic
since only maybe 1 out of 200 will buy and your commission per sale may only be
around $10. SEO help your site get top ranking in the search engines so more
people can find you. There may be over 1 million pages competing for a search
term relating to a product you are trying to sell so you have to be really good.
Thousands of people already know how to do this, so you have lots of catch up to
do. 3. Then there is lots of...

The Age of a Domain Name
One of the ways Google
uses to minimize search engine spam is by giving new websites a waiting period
of three to four months before giving it any kind of PageRank. This is referred
to as the "sandbox effect". It's called the "sandbox effect" because it has been
said that Google wants to see if those sites are serious about staying around on
the web. The sandbox analogy comes from the concept that Google does this by
throwing all of the new sites into a sandbox and let them play together, away
from all the adults. Then, when those new sites "grow up", so to speak, then
they are allowed to be categorized with the "adults", or the websites that
aren't considered new.

The Importance of Backlinks
When search engines
calculate the relevance of a site to a keyword, they consider the number of
QUALITY inbound links to that site. So we should not be satisfied with merely
getting inbound links, it is the quality of the inbound link that matters. A
search engine considers the content of the sites to determine the QUALITY of a
link. When inbound links to your site come from other sites, and those sites
have content related to your site, these inbound links are considered more
relevant to your site. If inbound links are found on sites with unrelated
content, they are considered less relevant. The higher the relevance of inbound
links, the greater their quality. For example, if a webmaster has a website
about how to rescue orphaned kittens, and received a backlink from another
website about kittens, then that would be more relevant in a search engine's
assessment than say a link from a site about car racing. The more relevant the
site is that is linking back to your website, the better the quality of the
backlink.

The Body Content
Page text is very important part
of search engine optimization. Many search engines like Google "strip" the body
text and use it to not only to display sections in their search results, but
they also use the body text to determine the subject matter of web pages. This
way mostly relevant sites are found in their search results.
Keywords and
phrases should appear toward to the tops of your web pages and "trickle" down
the page. Here is how. Let's start with the HEADING tag. Here are example
Heading tags in order which should appear in-between the BODY tags of your web
page(s):

The Easiest Way to Exercise Your lateral thinking skills in
SEO by: John Alexander
I was noticing a load of significant
traffic coming in through 3 or 4 of my main pages for this project where a
client was selling vitamin type supplements. While there was some good targeted
traffic coming in, there were not many sales happening. Often, the most natural
things in the world for us to do, is work on those OTHER important pages which
are not ranking yet. At one point I stopped to consider the possibility of
looking at things another way.
Was there anything I could possibly do
"quickly," that would get this client some new business, while I was in the
process of working on getting the other newest pages ranked? I had noticed much
of the traffic was coming in on one particularly busy FAQ (Frequently Asked
Questions) page. It became apparent that one of the reasons people were coming
into this FAQ page was because they had "questions" in their mind about this
supplement product which needed answering. (What is the product?, Is it safe?,
Was there controversy?) In other words, I felt they were not ready to buy, but
the reason they were flocking to this page was for general information. What
other information could I give them that would give them some "peace of mind"
about this product?

Ten Ways to Make Sure Your SEO Goes Out of Its Way for
You by: Michael Murray
If they want to have success, companies
should do everything they can to ensure that their SEO firm doesn't provide
lousy service. Here are 10 tips to keep in mind: 1. Be realistic. Don't
waste your time or the SEO firm's expertise by arguing about broad search terms.
Don't say you want to be in the Top 10 for "e-commerce." The SEO firm should
ask: "E-commerce and what else? E-commerce consultants? Please be
specific." 2. Think long-term. If you can't help yourself and you want
broad search terms, such as "toys," think through what it may take to pull that
off. Variations on your favorite term may be best in the short term. If you
start looking a year or two out, then make sure there aren't site design,
programming and link popularity flaws. 3. Be open with log files. Don't
shield log files from the SEO firm. Admit if your web analytics capability is
poor. How can the SEO firm do a good job if your host company can't provide
decent statistics, such as the number of visitors from search engines and the
actual search terms they use?

The Rise and Rise of Article PR - What are the
Implications? by: Glenn Murray
Because article PR is such an
effective way of generating a high search engine ranking, it has now entered the
mainstream. As an SEO copywriter, I get several requests each week for quotes to
write articles. These requests come almost exclusively from business owners and
marketing managers who know little (if anything) about SEO. They obviously
didn't go looking for article PR; article PR found them... As a result of its
newfound mainstream popularity, the number of articles being written and
submitted has increased by between 100% - 600% in the past year! Christopher
Knight, owner of the biggest article submission site, EzineArticles, tells me
that the number of article submissions to his site increased by a staggering
600% from 2004 to 2005. In 2004, EzineArticles was averaging only 1416 article
submissions per month. In 2005, it was averaging 8482 article submissions per
month!
Similarly, at the end of 2005, when I spoke with Mel Strocen,
owner of GoArticles, he reported a doubling of article submissions in the second
half of the year. "In the last 6 months article submissions have increased by
100%, going from about 1,000 submissions per week to 2,000+ per week," he said.

The Other Side of the Search Gods Abracadabra! by:
Liji
Pretty useful sites for someone very much interested in
knowing how to drape or the tradition of the sari?! (Well, no prayer goes
unanswered...whether you like the answer or not!) By using keywords to determine
how each page will be ranked in search results and not simply counting the
number of instances of a word on a page, search engines are attempting to make
the rankings better by assigning more weight to things like titles, subheadings,
and so on. Now, unless you have a clear idea of what you're looking for, it
may be difficult or impossible to use a keyword search, especially if the
vocabulary of the subject is unfamiliar. Similarly, the concept based search of
Excite (instead of individual words, the words that you enter into a search are
grouped and attempted to determine the meaning) is a difficult task and yields
inconsistent results. Besides who reviews or evaluates these sites for
quality or authority? They are simply compiled by a computer program. These
active search engines rely on computerized retrieval mechanisms called
"spiders", "crawlers", or "robots", to visit Web sites, on a regular basis and
retrieve relevant keywords to index and store in a searchable database. And from
this huge database yields often unmanageable and comprehensive results
...results whose relevance is determined by their computers. The irrelevant
sites (high percentage of noise, as it's called), questionable ranking
mechanisms and poor quality control may be the result of less human involvement
to weed out junk. Thought human intervention would solve all probes ...read on.
